I am writing as a concerned Texan and as part of a growing Hispanic community working hard to build a better future for our families. While the Legislature has taken steps to address property taxes, the reality for many of us is that our tax bills keep rising. Between increasing local debt, soaring appraisals, and unchecked local spending, owning a home is becoming harder.
The Texas Dream depends on stability and fairness. Unfortunately, property taxes are pushing too many Texans—especially first-time homeowners and Hispanic families—further behind. That is why I strongly support Governor Greg Abbott’s Property Tax Reform Plan.
This plan offers real, meaningful changes that put families and taxpayers first.
Putting taxpayers back in charge. The plan modernizes the property tax system so local governments are accountable to the people they serve.
Common-sense limits on local spending. Families must budget carefully, and local governments should do the same. Limiting spending growth to population growth plus inflation ensures government lives within its means.
Making tax increases harder. Property taxes should not rise without public support. Requiring a two-thirds vote from local voters before taxes increase ensures transparency and protects families from sudden hikes.
Giving voters the power to push back. Since property taxes are set locally, residents should have a real voice. Allowing voters to petition for a rollback election gives communities a tool to protect themselves.
Fixing the appraisal system. Annual appraisals create uncertainty and stress. Appraising property every five years and capping increases at 3% would bring predictability and long-term savings.
Governor Abbott’s plan empowers taxpayers, reins in irresponsible spending, and helps families stay in their homes. I respectfully urge you to stand with the more than 40 House members who have pledged support for this reform.
Our communities are counting on leadership that puts families first.
